Fears of rising sea levels are nothing new – a newspaper report dated 9th December 1904 expressed the anxiety of Freshwater residents concerning the serious encroachments of the sea.
The newspaper report from the Lichfield Mercury claimed that the sea would submerge low-lying land to create 2 islands unless prompt action was taken soon.
The Lichfield Mercury reporter wrote:
“The tides have been unusually high and strong winds have carried in huge waves, causing much damage to the Esplanade. An enormous slab of concrete has been carried away from the sea-wall causing some anxiety as to the security of the foundations of various properties.
“On Friday last the committee of the Isle of Wight Rural Council visited the spot and it is feared unless prompt steps are taken the sea may break through the low lands and thus create two islands.”

looks like the climate change zealots were in action back then – here we are over a hundred years later and nothing happened – just like nothing will happen with the latest panic and doom mongers predictions
just google the doom laden predictions going back to the 1970’s that never materialised – although plenty of taxes were levied, as well as conference expenses claimed and salaries paid to the non jobs that appeared.
Didn’t happen now did it? What a surprise
That would be great then freshwater and Totland can have their own MP!
I heard they considered ordering a chain ferry
It must be all those horrible diesel cars and gas boilers that caused the temperatures to rise and the sea to boil…
Oh, hang on, I just saw the date, I thought it was a report from yesterday.
You lot are unbelievable- could it have anything to do with the sea defences that were built that stopped the sea breaking through? Let me guess, you all voted Brexit as well?
Can I interest anyone in membership to the Greta Thunberg fan club?
Who no way she is ignorant little child trying to find fame!
The permanent grimace on her face must be the discomfort of George Sorose’s hand up her rear end.
7,000 years ago , Freshwater was joined to the mainland. The erosion isn’t going to stop now,
Glad it’s not now, we have one ‘Clowncil’ now & don’t need 2.
