A planning application has been submitted to convert the former HM Coastguard Station at Totland into a commercial art gallery.
A Lawful Development Certificate application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council for the proposed change of use of the former home of Needles Coastguard Rescue Team at Lanes End.
The development plans for the single-storey building include a series of minor alterations, such as the replacement of the garage door with a brick facade, landscaping and roof-mounted solar panels.
The gallery would focus on nature-themed exhibitions, showcasing work primarily by Isle of Wight artists, with some national and international contributors. These exhibitions would be held quarterly, with viewings by invitation only.
General opening hours are proposed as 09:00-17:00 from Monday to Saturday, with occasional evening events ending no later than 20:00.
This planning application follows the relocation of the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team to Golden Fort. Island Echo exclusively revealed plans for a move in December 2022, before the new station was officially opened in January last year.
According to the applicant, Brett Walpole, 2 existing parking spaces at the site will be reserved for staff use only. All other visitors will be expected to walk to the gallery via nearby footpaths, with no parking permitted within the residential street of Lanes End itself.
Walpole says the proposal has been well received by nearby residents, and aims to preserve the character of the 1952-built structure while promoting environmental and cultural themes through art.
A decision is expected by 30th March 2026.
