2 large piles of fly-tipped rubbish have been discovered in a beauty spot high upon St George’s Down near Arreton.
Local Chris Smith was enjoying a cycle between Arreton and Newport today (Sunday) when he made the discovery next to where a number of burnt-out vehicles have blotted the landscape for some time.
It is thought that the fly-tipping may have been carried out by a commercial vehicle due to the amount of waste present, including several white goods appliances.
Chris says:
“What’s wrong with people ? Lynnbottom tip is just around the corner – it would have been easier to drive there than the half a mile up an unmade bridleway to dump it in the dark.
“I’ve contacted Island Roads but have yet to receive a response”.
Another Islander, Neil Stables, was taking advantage of the Green Lanes being re-opened for the summer season when he came across the rubbish too. He is urging fellow Islanders to ask for a waste transfer note from any business collecting rubbish to ensure it is being legitimately disposed of.
Just last week Island Echo reported that the Isle of Wight Council failed to issue a single fine for fly-tipping during 2019/20, despite more than 500 incidents being recorded including 4 involving asbestos.

The problem is the unlicensed operators that are just in it for the money and don’t want to pay to dump the rubbish so they just fly tip it knowing it’s very unlikely they’ll get caught it’s normally the people who’s rubbish it was get in trouble
Well it will continue due to the fact our council don’t bother tracing and fining the scum that do this ….
Should make it a priority…..
Exactly. Not one person was fined for fly tipping last year. Disgusting. The council can’t be bothered. Just shows they don’t care about the well being and IOW environment.
Absolutely disgusting … BUT the Island Council are making rubbish disposal a real nightmare on the Island . Reduced opening times at the dump , reduced workers at the dump , recycling is a joke on this Island .
The Council Tax has NOT been reduced in reflection of the reduced waste facilities the Island people have to contend with !! .. If we had any backbone like the French .. We would REFUSE to pay our Council Tax bills until this is sorted out !! ..
The Island Council are to BLAME
Disgusting, yet solar cameras are so cheap, all roads and locations should now have hidden cameras, yet the courts are so weak, I guess it would be pointless anyway now.
Surprised there’s not more, when an article last week said not One prosecution for fly tippers last year, not exactly off putting is it.
And that article will encourage even more people to do this. More press IRresponsiblity
Nope. The opposite. They just reported that they are completely incompetent at issuing fines because these spots are isolated and un-monitered. So will they come up with a solution with the outstanding minds we’ve evolved and all this technology ? Still nope.
The council recently reported, I believe, that they have a designated officer to deal with this, so what have they been doing about it. Nothing it seems.
If they do actually have such an officer on the council, maybe we should know who he/she is and approach him/her for an explanation of his/her job description and give us his/her report on the progress (or lack of it) up to now.
Just checked, it’s actually a Task Force.
https://www.iow.gov.uk/news/Task-force-aims-to-tackle-fly-tipping.
Surprised there’s not more, because the chances of getting caught by this council are basically nill. Carry on dumping
With ZERO enforcement by the council/police its open season out there. Im surprised there aren’t more episodes like this.
I’m sorry to say, Plato, that there will be more and more episodes like this. Until the Council, Police and Courts start to do the job for which they are taking our money, that is to PROTECT US from the scum responsible, then it will continue.
It’s utterly tragic that our lovely island should be so ruined in this vile manner.
How about the Council putting a reward out for informatIon. To be paid from the sale of any impounded vehicle involved or seize any assets to be sold. Failing that, it should be a criminal offence and hard labour should be brought back. Any tech savvy entrepreneur could set up a part time hobby/business with remote cameras perhaps.
I said when it was reported the council was reducing the opening times at the dump. That it would lead to fly tipping. But you can’t educate pork so the council never listens, another great error to add to the Floating ? Bridge fiasco
I don’t think it is the reduced opening hours that are the issue but the opening times that are the problem.10am-6pm make it unviable for many working Islanders to get to the tip on a week day thus creating a situation where we feel the need to ask the man and van to dispose of our waste for us. Is this a ploy by the council.and Amey to encourage us to pay tipping fees for something we already pay in our forever inflation busting council tax rates. I THINK SO. Come on I W council, prove me wrong. How about trying 12 noon- 8pm and give everyone the opportunity to get the full benefit of your services that we all pay for and not just the few.
That pink thing in the photo is very distinguishable. The person who threw it out should contact the police and give them the telephone number of the cowboy fly tippers who so irresponsibly dumped it. Brain dead, idiotic excuse for a human being. Look at the beautiful surroundings where you live moron, people like you are ruining it for the people who love and care about the countryside and the environment we live in. P*ss off and go live in an inner city, you don’t belong here.
This makes me sooo mad. If these Chuffers are caught, should be made to clean up all the fly tipping incidences for at least a year.
In the Victorian era recycling was a highly profitable business – read ‘Our Mutual Friend’ by Charles Dickens. Now it just costs us, you and me, a lot of money.
