A fire at Lynnbottom Tip – discovered just minutes after opening the gates to the public – has seen fire crews respond to the outskirts of Newport this morning (Sunday).
It was just gone 10:00 that a fire was located within a building used for sorting materials.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the situation, mobilising 3 appliances from Newport and Ryde to the scene.
Main jets and breathing apparatus are currently being utilised by firefighters, who have the incident under control.
The tip has been closed to all members of the public on what is one of the busiest days of the year.
Those arriving are being turned away by tip staff.
It is unclear when the gates will be reopened.
UPDATE – A water carrier from Ventnor has now been mobilised to Lynnbottom, to assist with the supply of water as firefighters damp down the affected area.
