UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are this afternoon (Wednesday) tackling a fire at GKN’s Falcon site in East Cowes.
Appliances from Ryde, Newport and East Cowes are all attending the incident alongside the Foam Salvage Tender from East Cowes and an aerial ladder appliance from Newport.
Workers have been evacuated from the site whilst firefighters tackle the small fire, which is thought to be under control.
Emergency crews were called to the manufacturing site on Ferry Road at around 12:50.
Workers arriving at the change of shift are being directed to park in Red Funnel’s secondary marshalling yard.
UPDATE @ 13:40 – The fire, located in a diesel engine room for the sprinkler system designed to surprises fire, has been extinguished.
Appliances are now starting to leave the scene, however the site remains evacuated.
UPDATE @ 13:50 – Workers have been allowed to return to work this afternoon.
One pumping appliance from East Cowes and two fire officers remain on scene ventilating the building.
UPDATE @ 14:05 – The incident has been brought to a close just over an hour after the alert was sparked.
All appliances have returned to station.
