A Freshwater man who said he had drugs in possession because he used them to medicate his ADHD and autism has been fined £120. Norton Downer, 46, of Madeira Lane in Freshwater, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (15th March) charged with 2x possession of a controlled drug of class A and possession of a controlled drug of Class B. Lauren Stone, prosecuting, told the court that firstly on the 27th February, Downer was searched following an arrest for unrelated matters. During the search, officers found a small quantity of white powder – which later turned out to be cocaine – in Downer’s wallet. He admitted that the drugs were his and that they were used to help him medicate his ADHD and autism. Then, just over a week later on 9th March, Downer was arrested once again and yet more drugs – this time cocaine and cannabis – were found in his possession. Downer has 9 previous convictions for a total of 21 offenses and was given a suspended sentence by a Crown Court Judge back in March 2023. These latest offences saw him in breach of that very order. Defending, Oscar Vincent said that Downer had admitted in interview that the drugs were for his own use and that only small amounts were seized. Magistrates chose not to send the case to the Isle of Wight Crown Court and instead fined Downer £120. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

Apparently searched by police because someone reported that an individual was shining a torch through peoples windows.
Are you sure about that.i think you are wrong. Maybe it’s something that fills your boots.
Yet most of these beings into drugs are those who claim subsidised rent and c.tax, extra heating and food allowance and other freebees.
IF that is so, then their money should be cut to the estimated sum of what the courts estimate is spent on drugs, as they are clearly, like all social parents, paid way too much.
Money doesn’t matter to benefit people who have kids, as when C.tax and rent rises, they just get given more from the state.
Time they felt the pinch as well as workers who have a double whammy of keeping them and themselves in hard times.
cocaine – they were used to help him medicate his ADHD and autism
didn’t realise GP’s prescribed coke these days – oh thats right, they don’t
who is this p rick kidding with that lame excuse
Didn’t you know that coke is the best treatment for a hyperactivity disorder?
Many live their lives without an official diagnosis of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). It depends on where you live (Post Code lottery) and how long an individual has to wait for an assessment and diagnosis. I’ve seen, and I am sure many who work within this field, too, have noticed a high increase in individuals saying, “I’m autistic; I have ADHD.”
In the early ’90s, it was bi-polar. Then, at the beginning of the millennium, it was Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). After 2010, ADHD. Nowadays, it is autism.
Are people self-diagnosing themselves as they cannot get an official assessment due to waiting lists; sometimes, it can be seven years. Or are people using it as an excuse to justify bad choices?
A mate of mine has been waiting two years for a diagnosis, he’s too old for anyone to care.
Sadly, depending on where you live depends on who you will be assessed by (Post Code lottery). Some NHS Trusts have a seven-year waiting list.
Should children wait for an assessment, schools at least have SEND support which assists the child. However, for adults awaiting an assessment, there is nothing to support them.
In the last five years, there has been an enormous uplift in men over 50 being diagnosed with ASD. Why is that?
There was no such assessment when these individuals were children. Many masked or were cared for by parents. When that support disappears, the death of a parent or sibling that’s when these people come to the surface.
My concern is that adults have no support even after an assessment.
If you have have any of these conditions that last thing you should be doing is taking class A drugs or smoking pot. Will make it a lot worse.
dont always agree with you fred, but on this I do – seen too many paranoid people walking around as a consequence of coke and pot.
Rather give all the drugs to the old farts stop them driving hopefully
Anyone taking drugs need locking up.
I am fed up with the feeble excuse they take drugs for
Medical reasons, what a load of utter B@llocks.
