Germans form the largest foreign-born minority on the Isle of Wight, according to the latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics from the 2021 census.
697 Isle of Wight residents were born in Germany according to the ONS data. The 2nd biggest minority on the Island were Poles with 660 residents. Irish were 3rd with 610 residents, South Africans came in 4th with 481 and Filipinos 5th with 480.
Other significant groups of foreign-born residents came from the United States (366), Romania (341), India (292), Australia (226), France (221), and Italy (193). There were further smaller populations from Spain (175), Canada (155), Zimbabwe (150), and New Zealand (117).
Regarding other nations of the United Kingdom, there are 1,532 Scots living on the Island, 1,421 Welshmen and women, and 357 from Northern Ireland.
In total, the foreign-born population of the Isle of Wight has risen to 8,608 – 6.1% of the population – which represents a rise of 19.6% since the last census in 2011. This is the 250th-highest percentage out of 331 areas in England and Wales.
In comparison, 24% of Southampton’s population was born abroad, with the greatest number (12,000) coming from Poland. 16.9% of Portsmouth’s population originates from overseas, with Romanians the largest minority.
Nationally, 6 local authorities have more than half of their population born abroad: Brent, Westminster, Kensington, Newham, Harrow and Ealing (all London boroughs). The area with the smallest number of residents originating from outside the UK is Staffordshire Moorlands with just 2.6%.
A previous census release has shown the population of the Isle of Wight has risen to 140,400 – an increase of 1.5%. A whopping 29.2% of Islanders are now aged over 65 compared with 23.8% a decade ago. Nationally, the proportion of the population aged over 65 is just 18.6%.
I am sure in another decades time, things will look, and be drastically changed again.
Whilst Germans and similar standards and ways of life immigrants are welcome there is a growing number of those who will bring us down, not up, as they swell our numbers.
Clearly always exceptions to the rule, but that is just the problem, exceptions, so the majority will be ‘the’ problem
