Concerns have been raised in the local community after the female toilets at New Road in Lake were made unisex with the male toilets closed due to vandalism.
Locals have raised concerns about men urinating in the cubicles with the door open and the general state of the toilets. Fears have also been expressed about ‘perverts’ using the toilets.
It is understood that the vandalism in the male toilets was so severe that Lake Parish Council is looking to replace them completely – and that the using of the female toilets as unisex is only a temporary measure.
Councillors were reluctant to shut them completely as the revetment toilets remain closed while the Council seeks to source a new pump.
The matter is due to be discussed at Lake Parish Council’s meeting on Thursday night with the options being considered understood to include reducing the opening hours or closing the toilets completely.

as the council are forcing females to use the same facilities as the perverts, then they must be liable if an assault takes place.
when there are separate male and female spaces, the council is not liable, as they have provided separate facilities and are not responsible for controlling actual entry into each space.
without separate facilities for males and females, the council have intentionally created a situation whereby females are intentionally isolated in a confined, indoor space with males, where genitalia is being exposed for the purposes of using the toilet. The council must be held liable as they have created the risk, that wasn’t there before.
“council are forcing females to use the same facilities as the perverts”
What an utterly sexist comment. Perverts are not just men. At the age of 16 in my first job I was sexually harassed by the 40 something female workers on a production line. Their comments and jibes made me very uncomfortable and I left the job, many young boys have had the same experience.
Yes women deserve to feel safe, just as men do, when answering the call of nature.
Seems like you have an axe to grind and more interested in bashing the council then any real concern for the publics welfare.
Maybe you were the fire starter as you seem to hate men??
the majority of people convicted for sexual offences are male and as such are perverts. These perverts would normally make use of the male facilities, which ensures that the risk to females is reduced to virtually nothing. Having one facility for both males and females means the perverts have justification for being in a confined, closed, indoor space, with their genitalia out, in front of women and girls and the risk of an assault goes from virtually nothing to a very high probability.
it doesn’t take a genius to work this sort of thing out fred
“perverts have justification.. their genitalia out, in front of women and girls”
you do seem to know rather a lot about this sort of behaviour..
perhaps you have first-hand knowledge…are you one of them??
(like the openly gay-hayers who put on a homophobic front to cover the fact that they are themselves gay, but ashamed of it)
So are you suggesting that at 16 you were the works stud, yet you still left the job. Local headline was no doubt “nut screws washers and bolts”
And your legal qualifications are what?
you don’t need qualifications – just common sense – having males and females in the same toilet is a risk that isn’t there with separate facilities.
I think the point is, although statistically it is more likely a male will do something perverted, there are females perverts and everyone should feel safe regardless of their gender.
What a truly stupid exchange of comments. Go find something better to do with you time. You are both idiots writing drivel.
And you’re reading it and commenting… HHmmmm…..
The mindless scum vandals created the problem, in the unlikely event of them being caught they should be forced to pay the entire repair costs and if too young to have wages then make parents liable for the costs.
But if the men say that they identify as a woman, then the women should be fine with that and welcome them with open arms.
This is the way society is going.
Man goes into a woman’s toilet and says I am a man, the women get freaked out. But if the same man says that I am a woman then it’s cool.
Do you ever have an original thought, or do you just spew the vapid nonsense you’ve been brainwashed with whilst hiding behind a pseudonym?
My name is John, surname starts with B.
I like the Beach Boys, henceforth my username.
It is not nonsense, I am saying that men can not go into a ladies toilet or changing room.
But if they say they are a lady then they can go in.
I only post factual information here.
Hell no would I as use then ! That’s an utter disgrace
The continued closure of the revetment toilets during summer is a real pain. Does it really take months and months to source a pump?
And I’ve never seen anyone use the pay toilets on Cliff Gardens. Waste of money imo.
To those being critical of the parish Council, what are they supposed to do? The male toilets are unusable due to vandalism. They decided to do this as a temporary measure.
This article is anonymously sourced, which always makes me think the Island Echo is making it up. If someone feels that strongly about the issue they would be happy to be quoted, so these ‘concerns’ can’t be that bad.
Ryde seafront’s temporary loos were vandalised so often they were closed permanently.
Anyone who has issues where they need loos urgently would be appreciative of efforts to try to keep this facility open.
The way the culture is right now I actually feel uncomfortable using a toilet that women also use because if you look at them your a simp lol Also more to the point its private, psychology generally dictates that it’s more comfortable for us as humans to talk about the private and intimate parts of our bodies with the same sex as us let alone going to the lavatory with opposite sexes. Making unisex toilets available has no correlation to gender equality.
Replace all toilets with the type found near Shanklin Chine upper entrance. Single cubicle entered from the street with only a toilet and a sink in it. Nowhere for anyone to hang about. Costs 20 pence to use it. There are two and always in a good condition.
BTW – who took the picture of the fire in the toilets???? Was it the actual vandal?

Is it a British thing to be so paranoidly hung up about unisex toilets??
I have spent decades holidaying on camp sites in Europe, where more often than not, the entire ‘toilet block’ is unisex.
Urinals along one side, toilet stalls along another, then shower cubical, then wash basins, & no-one gets upset about it.
If I understand correctly with the toilets in Lake, they are all cubicles,.. so no-one is inadvertently exposing their genitals to anyone in an open room….
So why all the fuss ?
I think they are unisex toilets too at The Ventnor Botanic Gardens in the Car Park..
I hope everyone complaining about this has separate gender-segregated bathrooms at home – wouldn’t want to be hypocrites, would be?
I certainly do. My wife wouldn’t want to use the lav after me!

Idiot – you don’t generally allow complete strangers into your home to use your bathroom, do you
well, i definitely wouldn’t be inviting rude inbreds into my house, so you’ll have to find somewhere else to pee.
