The demolition of an eyesore Isle of Wight pub has finally been approved — nearly 4 years after plans were 1st submitted.
Now derelict, The Worsley, on Wroxall High Street, will be knocked down and replaced by 6 houses. The Isle of Wight Council has granted conditional planning permission for a mix of 2 and 3-bed chalet bungalows and houses.
The public house has stood empty for the last 10 years and has deteriorated in condition during that time. The Isle of Wight Council says it has become overgrown and unkempt.
A development plan was first submitted in November 2019, by E.B.C.S Ltd, but has been revised multiple times since then.
In planning documents, dating to the start of the application process, agent Andrew White Planning Consultancy claimed the site’s condition was having a negative impact on the surrounding area.
The consultancy said there were constraints and challenges — including protected trees, sewer pipes and impact on neighbouring properties — which meant the small-scale development was fairly complex.
In its decision notice this week, the Isle of Wight Council said The Worsley has fallen into a worse state of repair and it is of public benefit to demolish it and redevelop the site, improving its appearance and protecting and enhancing the character of the village.
There are 16 conditions. Among them: A method statement must be agreed before development can start, explaining how the site will be cleared and maintained; a contamination study must be carried out; and development must start within 3 years.

very dangerous corner to have the entrance..there will be a massive accident there in the future if this goes ahead..it’s so very sad seeing this attitude of letting historical buildings fall apart so they have to be knocked down, just so some dickhead miles away can squeeze the living cash out of the barren site, used to be a good venue, bands played there and it was great fun…wtf is happening to our once beautiful land?.
Always somebody with something negative to say. The villagers just want it demolished and houses built
No, the Council want more housing, so are happy to see land and buildings left for years to become vandalised. Then fewer people object when buildings are destroyed or land is built upon.
All part of the plan
The entrance to the estate opposite the smokin jacks is the same and guess what no issue and if people used the pubs maybe they stay open, dickhead
been loads of near misses there arsehole..
So no actual accidents then?
It was a pub !!!!
It had a car park!!!!!
Car’s drove in and out,!!!!
So what is the problem?????
I live along there i have never seen any dick head
With the prices they charge who the hell would want to go there. Would rather go to a place with a decent outlook not some grotty road or tacky fence, and that’s outside, as for the inside, toy town Las Vegas, and not in a good way.
This is a brownfield site being used to build houses instead of a greenfield site, I thought that was what everyone wanted see happen to protect our countryside. Need to make your mind up.
Why more Housing, renovate the existing building into a new Pub.
Fallen into disrepair ! , has been vandelised by local youths and niether IOW council or police have done anything about it , in fact have allowed and encouraged by forcing it’s closure in first place and then refusing any development.
Forcing it’s closure, no, it failed as a pub, plain and simple.
Not vandalised by local youths at all. You all know who did it.
Vandalised after it closed yes, but a failing pub is a failing pub, ask Smokin Jacks, that might be up for sale or closure soon too rumour has it.
Smokin Jacks is a very strange concept. The only pub in a village and on the main drag to Ventnor should be a goldmine. Open a traditional pub with the usual pub grub favourites and it will thrive. The idea of Jack Daniels sauce and a multicoloured burger bun turns my stomach. Just change it back to the Star and sell chicken and chips, pie and chips, etc. for a tenner and it would be packed. Simple home cooked food rather than gimmicky rubbish.
They are demolishing the wrong eyesore pub in Wroxall, no one uses that one either. Pubs are failing left right and centre so just turn them into something useful, not leave them as useless.
The other one stinks and flies everywhere. Needs a health and safety check.
So why was the shop not allowed to move there due to ‘traffic’ issues, yet houses will be okay?
Can’t believe that someone didn’t want to turn this into a cafe or tea room given the amount of footfall that Appuldurcombe gets and located on the main drag to Ventnor. Great views from the back.
I feel sad that a beautiful building, in my eyes, gets demolished for housing which will be the same style, nothing interesting and pleasant to look at.
