UPDATE: Police have cordoned off two properties in Newport this afternoon (Monday) over fears an explosive has been found in the front garden.
Officers were called to Argyle Road on the Albany estate at around lunchtime when a homeowner, digging in the garden of a semi-detached home, discovered the object.
The scene has been cordoned off whilst Police await the arrival of the bomb disposal team from the mainland. As a precaution, Number 2 and Number 4 have both been evacuated.
The road remains open.
UPDATE @ 16:40 – The object, believed to be a hand grenade, has been safely removed from the garden and taken to Newport Police Station awaiting the arrival of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth.
The scene has now been cleared.
