A power outage in Ryde this afternoon (Wednesday) is affecting more than 2,000 households and businesses in the PO33 region and neighbouring areas.
Emergency services including 2 appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire Service, as well as Police, are on the scene at Quarry Road in the town.
It is understood that power lines from the substation have fallen onto the allotments which have now been evacuated with a Police cordon put in place.
Island Echo understands that outages have been reported as far away as Bembridge and Seaview.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are on site and have issued the following statement:
“We’re sorry for the power cut affecting Brading and the surrounding areas. Engineers are en-route and expect to have the power back on by 20:00.”
UPDATE @ 18:14 – 1 fire appliance has now stood down and left the scene but 1 remains whilst SSEN engineers work at the substation.
A Police presence remains at the entrances to the allotments on Quarry Road in the interests of public safety.
Power has now been largely restored.
You can watch the moment the explosion was captured on camera here.

Was at work at Maccy D’s thinking we might get lucky and get the evening off…. No such luck, SSE were very quick at getting it sorted. The power was only out for a few minutes at most for us!
