imageAn explosion was heard in Newport last night (Sunday) when an electricity sub station caught fire.

Two appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to St John’s Road in the town at around 23:15 after a sub station caught fire, resulting in a loss of power in the area.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the small blaze, which broke out at the site of the former Fire Service HQ near Whitepit Lane.

imageSouthern and Scottish Energy engineers were called to the site to restore power.

No one was injured in the incident.

UPDATE @ 08:05 – Power has now been restored to properties in the area
