A new bike hub has been given the go-ahead near a popular Isle of Wight cycle route, which will also provide parking for the ever-popular Pedallers cafe.
As previously reported by Island Echo, plans for the hub were submitted last year for a 2-storey building will be built on the former ground of Newchurch Football Club, on The Shute, which will include a repair workshop, cycle hire and wash facilities for visitors.
The sustainable, rural cycle hub has been proposed by the owners of the Pedallers Cafe, Mr and Mrs Hughes.
It is hoped the hub will encourage people to park and cycle either on leisure journeys or work commutes, as it sits near the Route 23 cycle track, which runs from Cowes to Newport and through to Sandown.
Plans have been supported by Cycle Wight, Visit Isle of Wight and the Isle of Wight Ramblers, along with locals who say the car park would remove the danger of stationary vehicles on the road.
No path has been proposed between the cycle hub and the cycle path but a formal bridleway is now required by the Isle of Wight Council, behind the nearby business park, so pedestrians do not have to use the main road.
Supporters also feel the Dutch-barn style building for the cycle hub is modern and traditional and its facilities would boost the Island’s reputation as a cycling destination.

More vermin on the roads just what the normal driver wants
Duly flagged. *please note admin.
I think the whole point of this is to get the cyclists off the roads and on to the cycle track….
Whenever I’m held up by cyclists I try to remember that they have a right to be on the road whereas motorists are only there by licence.
The last thing we need is A) to lose natural countryside to build a hub for these lycra clad idiots. B) More arrogant cyclists blocking the roads. The irony, green space destroyed to cater for the so called green way of travel. Still what do you expect from a so called sport sponsored by oil companies. Hope this gets blocked. Ridiculous.
No, it’s not the last thing we need but JUST the sort of thing that is a needed as we transition from an oil based economy to a non fossil fuel based economy. This will take time, and some people will be afraid at the prospect of change. I don’t call young families enjoying the cycling infrastructure ‘lycra clad idiots’ just human beings bringing up children to appreciate the world, all a question of perspective really.
Speaking of oil, look at this.

Shell trying to look good. But with billions in profit and ripping of the working man and his famililes.
Shell sponsoring cycling, great move. NOT.
I presume from your comment that you have absolutely no idea what that piece of land is currently used for..
And therefore are in no way qualified to comment on the proposed change of use….
I can comment on what I want thank you very much, free speech and all that, Russia hasn’t taken us over yet. Get back on your ferry, if they are running.
you obviously can’t read….
I did not, in any way, say you couldn’t or shouldn’t comment,..
mearly that, as you obviously (from you comment of “lose natural countryside to build a hub”) do not know what the land is currently used for, your comment on ‘loosing natural countryside’ is irrelevant…
as for “Get back on your ferry”,.. are you trying to imply that you think I am not a local ???
,,.. yet another thing you obviously know nothing about
what a waste of time i bet its paid by the islanders need to sort out the rest of the dumps on the island
no, not a waste of time.
Wake up and SEE what it is all about. A means for the crafty owner to ,eventually gain planning permission for a home, ‘Needed to cater for the business giving employment’ will be the cry a fake break in or two will add clout to the case, and another area of beauty with a million pound home via stealth will be there within a decade. Covenants should be attached , lucrative to turn brown field sites into easy money
A super project and situated just off route 23 is ideal. Can’t wait to pop by and check it out once completed.
We shouldn’t be encouraging more Lycra wearing knob heads!
Brilliant idea. Get the brain dead slobs that have posted below out of their cars.
I’m all for encouraging cyclists. But won’t a carpark encourage cars? Surely we should discourage the burning of fuel, especially for leisure use?
Just off for a drive round the garden centres…
