UPDATED: Police, fire and ambulances crews are attending a serious road traffic collision on The Downs near Ashey this evening (Saturday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been called to help extricate the occupants of a car after it was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle, believed to be a silver Vauxhall Vectra.
Two ambulances, an ambulance officer, firefighters from Ryde and several Police units are all attending the incident, which occurred at around 16:00.
The road has been closed in both directions from East Ashey Lane to the junction with Brading Down Road and is expected to remain closed for some time. A hard road closure has been put in place at the request of Police.
UPDATE @ 17:45 – At least one person has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance this evening. A second ambulance remains on the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle involved is thought to have escaped any serious injury.
UPDATE @ 18:45 – The road remains closed this evening as a police investigate the incident.
Two persons are thought to have now been conveyed to hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
UPDATE @ 20:55 – The male driver of the Silver car has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving, Island Echo understands.
The occupants of the second vehicle – a male and female – are both said to be lucky to be alive following the crash. The female has sustained broken ribs.
The road has now reopened in both directions.
