bembridgernlilifeboatrecoveryThe activation of an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) sparked the launch of Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat this morning (Sunday).

Shortly before 11:10 Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ lifeboat to locate the fishing boat ‘Percival’, which was returning from off the French coast, to make sure that the vessel and its crew were ok. The request was made as the vessel’s EPIRB was intermittently sending out distress calls and Solent Coastguard had been unable to contact the vessel by VHF radio.

The Tamar-class lifeboat located the ‘Percival’ around 8 nautical miles South East of Bembridge and was able to assure Solent Coastguard that all was well. The crew onboard the fishing vessel had no idea that their EPIRB had activated.
