Firefighters from Ryde were mobilised to tackle a reported car fire in the town during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
1 appliance responded to Wood Street – near the junction with Dover Street – at around 02:00.
It was discovered that a Subaru Impreza estate was alight.
Although the vehicle was saved from complete destruction, the interior of the car has been 100% damaged by heat and smoke.
It’s unclear if the fire was started deliberately but a piece of paving slab can be seen beside the car and it’s smashed passenger window.
The immediate area has been cordoned off awaiting recovery to be arranged by the vehicle owner.
Belated bonfire night celebrations led to a call out to East Cowes for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service last night (Saturday) when a stray firework set fire to a hedge.
It was around 20:00 when firefighters were mobilised to the junction of Old Road and Hefford Road, where a hedge was well alight.
The situation was quickly brought under control.

Vandals more likely, not a ‘stray’ firework….
