A man who was sacked by a Shanklin hotel for continuously turning up to work drunk has been found guilty of using threatening words/behaviour towards the establishment’s manager.
Scott Francis, 40, of Howard House in Newport pleaded guilty to 1 count of use threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Friday.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said that Francis – who was the bar manager – had been let go by The Shanklin Hotel after he repeatedly turned up to work drunk. As a result, he was told he had a short time to leave the on-site accommodation he was staying in.
Throughout that day, Francis continuously turned up at the bar asking for a drink, being drunk and disorderly and damaging the venue’s reputation with his drunken antics – all whilst still in his work uniform.
He was told by the manager he was to leave the premises by 10:00 the next day. Francis became increasingly agitated and started shouting at the manager, calling him ‘a f***king pr*ck’.
Police were called the next day after Francis refused to leave the hotel. He was arrested as a result.
Defending, Amy Hosell said that her client was an alcoholic and that he knows he needs to seek help and stop his drinking. She added that he struggles with mental health issues but doesn’t have a formal diagnosis.
The case was adjourned to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled. Francis will appear back at court on 25th November.

So had a good job/money/accomodation and lost the lot over unable to moderate his alcohol intake, this loss of work and public shame may well now not help mental health too. You’re an adult, start behaving like one learn very quickly to stay off the drink .
wow freddie what great insight…knowing everything and all that….
get a life Karen
Another sob story for being a pratt
Shame and very sad as underneath all the alcohol Scott is actually a really nice guy.
Fancy putting a drunk behind a bar, what did the hotel expect. Leopards do not chance their spots. Mental health issue is that he is an alcoholic and needs to face up to it and either live with it or address it. There is such a misuse of the Mental Health label as a get out of jail card. You are either an Alcoholic or you have Mental Health, I don’t feel you can be both, one my trigger the other but it is total disrespect to those that have serious mental health issues due to mental reasons not those induced by alcohol. About time these labels were redefined then the punishment would fit the deed.
Why would any manager put a alcoholic in charge off the bar
How many times do you let someone turn up for work drunk before sacking them? Did it at least 4 times
There’s only one fu*king pr*ck here and it’s not the Manager! If this chap lived in Newport and worked in Shanklin, he would have been driving drunk to. No time or sympathy for drink drivers. Selfish and definitely stupid.
Do you have reading comprehension difficulties?
He was living in staff accommodation at the hotel. It’s written in the article.
