19-year-old Tyler Simpkins, who crashed his Renault Clio into a fence in Ventnor, has been banned from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to drink driving.
The Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard on Friday that Simpkins had been drinking in The Star pub in Wroxall on 12th November this year. He consumed no less than 4 pints.
It was when Simpkins and his passenger left the pub that the evening took a wrong turn, with the teenager crashing his Renault into a fence on Newport Road, Ventnor.
Simpkins, of St Martin’s Road in Wroxall, ran from the crashed vehicle but was soon detained by Police. The court heard from Oscar Vincent, defending, that his client realised he would be traced and therefore sat on a bench and waited for officers to find him.
He was taken into custody at Newport Police Station and gave an evidential breathalyser reading of 55. The legal is 35.
The roofer, of no previous convictions, was handed a 12-month driving ban and fined him £275, as well as ordering him to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge – a total of £394.
Good to see The Star making sure the customers are fit to drive NOT. Typical of that pub anyway, badly run is putting it mildly.
Wow a lot of thumbs down for that comment, why? It’s the truth, and as the “driver” only lived literally “up the road and round the corner” why did he need to drive. I guess the thumbs downs come from the entire customer base of the pub and the staff…..

He really could have done some damage, pure luck that he didn’t!
How can pubs police the drunk drivers? Fill them up with beer then call the police when they go out the door.. keeping tabs on every drinker to see if they’re over the limit.. doubt they have time for that.. yes sure call them if they know for sure they’re driving home.
It’s all down to the police which are a bit sparse. Drunk drivers are potential killers!
Too lenient… drink or drug driving should be automatic 10 year ban !! That would hopefully take many of them off the road…
If they are prepared to drink and drive, they will be prepared to ignore any driving ban and continue to drive illegally. He should have been made to go and repair the fence, or at least pay to have it fixed.
It was my fence he crashed into taking out concrete posts , shrubs , compost bin landing right in my back garden his car left the road !!!! They made out he crashed into a fence !!!!! Plus this happened 2 years ago !!!!!! He got banned write off his car but he not got all the mess to sort out !!!!
