A childrens’ activity instructor has been banned from driving for 14 months after crashing her car into a tree whilst heading to McDonald’s for an overnight snack, despite being 1.5x the drink-drive limit.
21-year-old Skye Toovey, of Elm Road in Wantage, Oxfordshire appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with drink driving – namely 54 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
The court heard how Toovey, an activities instructor at PGL Little Canada in Wootton, was driving through Firestone Copse at around 02:00 on 19th June when she crashed her Ford Focus head-on into a tree. Police received a call from a female stating they had crashed and couldn’t get out of the car.
Officers were deployed to the Fishbourne area and soon found Miss Toovey walking down Firestone Copse Road. She confirmed she was the driver, but became anxious and stressed when asked to carry out a roadside breathalyser. Skye, who claimed she was driving to McDonald’s for food, blew 49 at the roadside and was arrested. She later recorded 54 on the evidential machine.
Defending, James Cameron said the real reason she had left her accommodation was due to an ‘issue’ with a colleague. She decided she would leave the property but accepts that she didn’t need to drive.
The instructor of 3 years, who is expected to keep her job, was described as hard-working and having had ‘made a bad call’ that night. Toovey has no previous convictions.
Magistrates handed Skye a 14-month disqualification from driving and fined her £253, with costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.

What a stupid, irresponsible girl. Thank God she crashed into a tree, sorry for the …….. That could have been another motorist and she could have seriously injured or killed someone. I have no time for stupid people and this one is certainly stupid.
