The driver of a Volkswagen Golf R has been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving after ploughing into a garden fence in Cowes during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Police had already been made aware of the potential danger the vehicle and its driver posed when officers received notification at around 02:30 that a car had left the road at Nodes Road, Northwood.
Responding officers arrived on scene to find a red VW Golf R with front end damage.
Island Echo understands that the a group of young males were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, with the driver taken into custody on suspicion of drink and drug driving – having failed roadside tests.
The vehicle has now been recovered leaving the property owners to pick up the pieces.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement

It’s just so depressing that we see this disgraceful behaviour week in, week out! Tailgating, speeding, vans parking on double yellow lines to pop into a shop to buy lunch (Sainsbury’s Newport by the zebra crossing is a favourite), drink/drug driving, loud/banging exhausts (antisocial behaviour from both motorbike and car drivers), jumping red lights …. the list is endless! I have dash cam installed in my car, and I advise others to do the same. The standard of driving, by all age groups, is appalling on this island. I have written to the Carisbrooke Parish Council concerning the speed of cars down Carisbrooke High Street, but I won’t hold my breath waiting for a reply! I hope this car is crushed, heavy fines/ban for the driver (should be prison), and that future insurance premiums will be out of reach for him.
There needs to be more law and order on
the island.
Maybe IW Council should get their
Civil Enforcement Officers to target the
vehicles parking on Double yellow lines and
Zig Zags etc!, they seem more concerned if
motorists park a few minutes over their time.
Up our taxes and get more police on
our roads.
It’s 2024 the Island needs more CCTV
Anpr / Speed Camera’s.
Due to the high number of drink and drug
driving incidents on the island, it might be a good idea to
set up Road blocks and pull drivers over.
“If they have nothing to hide, they won’t mind”
How else can we STOP motorists drink and drug
driving.
Seems to be a serious problem on this small island.
Good at least this ick is off the road..for now, car a write off while the house owners have to foot the bill to repair their damage…
IW Council should foot the bill, it is because they
don’t have any speed Camera’s in place such
accidents take place.
Wouldn’t happen if Sadiq Khan was running the
Island.
He would have Camera’s everywhere, he would
STOP traffic crime once and for all.
You really are a deluded anker..
People like yourself don’t like to hear the truth.
Takes an anker to know an anker.
victims of these snort/swill/smackhead a88holes should take out a private prosecution against them for loss and damage and costs of repair, taken from their wages or more than likely their free handouts, paid directly to those victims, plus costs for legal expences. What’s the betting he had no insurance. This should be added to the long awaited jail terms.
