A dog that had fallen down a cliff in Ventnor was rescued by Coastguard crews last night (Thursday). At around 18:30 a dog owner called 999 and asked for the Coastguard’s help after their dog had fallen down a cliff at Ventnor Park. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor were sent to the scene Once on scene, a specialist cliff rescue team safely rescued the dog before reuniting it with its owner. HM Coastguard has issued the following safety information to those walking their dogs near the coast.
- Stay away from cliff edges – they can be crumbly or slippery when wet.
- Always keep your dog on a lead near the cliff edge.
- Do not attempt to rescue a dog which is being swept out to sea. This is because you are likely to get in to difficulty and many dogs return to shore alive but some owners do not. Call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Oh come on dog owners keep your dogs safe & on a lead!! There are many to choose from ( short/long/extendable) why gamble the safety of your dog with the good old attitude “oh mine has great recall” etc
Not only that using the time of emergancy services which could be prevented….
It’s not rocket science is it!
Have seen the video of the incident
dog off the lead
reap what you sow
More irresponsible dog owners will be along soon…
The only thing that makes sense to me is the amount that you pay to get the vaccine because you don’t have a clue
Another brainless dog owner who should be banned from owning a dog
I’m a dog lover well done the CG
Woof woof the cat said woof
Advice given. It’s basic common sense. Some people are so thick.
All dogs should be kept on a lead.
Fine the dog owner heavily for wasting Emergency services time.
Dogs should be kept on a lead.
Make sure your wife stays on one hand please
I hope the poor dog is OK and thank God for the rescue services. Hopefully the thicko moronic owners will be billed for the call out and perhaps they ought to be named and shamed. KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEAD!!!!
Or don’t keep one at all.
I don’t think this is wasting the coastguards’ time. They have a job to do, they were doing it, they got some good practice in, and they saved a life. But I do think dogs should be on leads near cliff edges.
It was in Ventnor, the dog poo capital of the island. What else would you expect?
