An 88-year-old charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, following an incident in Shanklin back in 2022, has died before appearing in court. John Mather, from Hertfordshire, was the driver of a Lexus which, on 18th November 2022, ploughed into a bench on the seafront at Shanklin. The bench subsequently hit an elderly pedestrian and the vehicle came to a stop balancing over the sea wall. As reported by Island Echo at the time, emergency services were called to the seaside spot at around lunchtime when a car mounted the pavement, resulting in leg injuries for a woman in her 70s. It’s known by Island Echo that the elderly driver, who was on holiday on the Island with his wife, hit the throttle instead of the brake whilst trying to park his automatic car.

Whys it taken two years to get to court?
Because just in case you don’t listen to the news, the UK has had a massive invasion of newcomers many of whom have committed crimes, as have plenty of our own people and countless cases of the children of earlier immigrants fill our courts daily stabbing shooting, raping, maiming, acid attacking, drug dealing gang rape, etc etc.
So each case has to wait, as courts can’t push the elderly forward in case they ‘die’ before the court case.
Anyway the poor man has suffered enough and it was an accident, not like the countless cases of drug, drink, and reckless driving we see daily so question the living, NOT the dead.
RiP
Certainly, if all the terrible crimes newcomers commit had received the publicity that the indigenous would have done, had they committed those terrible crimes, then the public would have not been so fooled into seeing them as less of a threat to our society than we now witness.
Too late now, all we can do is slow the inevitable damage to our children’s futures.
Total and utter bullshit. You’re a really very nasty person pushing this unevidenced drivel aren’t you? Why is that? Personality disorder? Ulcer? Or just low self-worth and inadequate? Seems the only way you can feel good about yourself is by systematically denigrating whole swathes of others. Does it work sweetheart, or is the pain and self loathing still there afterwards?
Yet again karen is doing her usual attacks on random people. She really is one bitter and twisted person. I wish she would find another outlet for her frustrations. Maybe go on a dating app and find someone. Of course, they would have to be a very patient person (or deaf) if she is like this in real life.
Totally agree with you.
Because of the courts backlog due to covid.
There is a massive backlog in cases, due partly to Covid-19 and largely to the morons in government who think it’s a good idea to cut funding for the courts and CPS.
Does it matter?
Did you want this elderly guy to get justice
before he unfortunately died?
I blame DVLA letting 88 Yr old people to still hold a driving licence?
More checks need to be done with anyone over 75-80.
Precisely. He got away with that! More needs to be done about arrogant elderly drivers…
Brexit, Covid, or immigrants. Pick one.
Seems like a waste of time, now he’s dead.
Such a waste of time, no point prosecuting older people for an accident. Concentrate one the young ones, they are anti social.
well ground now…
Still no Safety railings along Shanklin Esplanade.
A professor died in August 2003 due to a vehicle driving on
to the beach.
“Over 20 years later still no safety measures put in place”.
IW Council obviously does not understand Safety!,
are they waiting for someone else to be killed.
What if it was one of their family who died!
An accident, hardly dangerous driving. Though obviously could have had worse results.
How can mistaking the accelerator for the brake pedal constitute dangerous driving? It is certainly careless, but dangerous?? Dangerous driving implies intent to drive dangerously. I find it hard to believe that the pensioner intended to park dangerously.
His careless actions were dangerous and had a very nasty outcome. Could have been even worse.
No one will take responsibility in stopping a driver who is unfit to drive because of their age. Doctors are reluctant and family members don’t want the grief it can cause. I had to step in to advice two family members to hung up their car keys and its not fun. We should all surrender our licence at 70/75 and if we wish to continue should have to undertake a Medical/Driving test to be able to drive. I suggest every five years. I am 64 and an ex driving/ psv instructor and would be happy to be retested when the time comes.
See you elderly drivers look what harm you cause and leave behind
Who’s that fool stood behind him grinning? Someone got hurt didn’t they?
Dead lucky to get off I suppose
