A car crash on St Lawrence Shute prompted a large response from the emergency services this evening (Monday).
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are currently in attendance and the road has been closed in both directions while recovery takes place.
It is understood that a single vehicle – a VW Golf – was involved in the incident and that the car rolled onto its roof.
Teams from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Isle of Wight Ambulance service also attended having been called at around 17:00.
They have since stood down with 1 casualty believed to have been taken to hospital as a precaution.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – The vehicle has now been recovered and the road re-opened in both directions.
Another undue care & attention no doubt
No doubt you were there, and saw what happened! You may be correct or you may be completely wrong.

It’s St Lawrence Shute – whilst the Whitwell Road end is wide enough for two vehicles, the pic is near the other end where it starts to narrow down to single car width. Assuming no medical event then it can only be greatly excessive speed. It had long been a rat run, and this is by no means the first accident here. The best thing to do would be to convert it to a one way street northbound.
Another case of an Idiot speeding, how else does one end up on their roof.
VW Golf, that idiots drive…..The idiot driving was a classic case of maniacs driving in an area that you would think would be impossible to endup on its roof….More idiots will defend this crash…
Look how narrow the road is, the National Speed Limit sign on the right of the picture.
Perhaps the IOW Council should seriously look at the speed limit currently in use. Only at idiot would drive at 60mph around these small winding roads!!!
Take note IOW Council of the speed restrictions Wales have introduced to try and prevent accidents in urban areas. Though if the brainless want to drive fast, they won’t be adhered to.
Your absolutely correct, how much money was wasted on a pathetic sign indicating a 60 mph limit, in such an obvious place that should be a max of 20mph…
My partner and I were walking up this road to catch the last bus when it happened right in front of us. It was very upsetting. Thanks to everyone that helped at the scene. Sorry i didnt get to thank the lady that helped me when i couldnt get a signal to call 999 at the bottom of the shute. Local people blocked the road either end to help traffic flow and a fantastic couple with elderly parents in their car stopped to help us and kept the driver awake. The emergency services were in attendance very quickly but no signs were put up to others that the road was closed. Luckily a lovely local lady warned other drivers. There are no road signs are in place to warn drivers about the steep gradient and the bend. I hope the driver is OK.
