A long-standing councillor has taken on the challenge of becoming the new Conservative group leader on the Isle of Wight Council.
Councillor Clare Mosdell is the group’s 3rd leader in 4 months, following the resignation of Councillor Suzie Ellis from the role earlier this month.
Confirming her new role today (Friday), Cllr Mosdell said she is honoured to have been chosen to fulfil the position. However, she has previously made it known she would not be continuing as an elected member of the Isle of Wight Council once her term comes to an end in 2025.
Clare has been on the authority since May 2017, as the representative for Newchurch, Havenstreet and Ashey, and is also a Newchurch Parish Councillor.
Under the previous Conservative administration, Cllr Mosdell was the cabinet member for adult social care, housing and public health.
The Conservatives recently lost a takeover bid of the authority, when Cllr Ellis narrowly failed to secure the council leadership from Councillor Phil Jordan. After her loss, and just 4 months in the role, Cllr Ellis resigned, saying she had seen the best and the worst of politics.
Previously, Councillor Joe Robertson took on the mantle as group leader after former Councillor Steve Hastings left the authority, but stood down to focus on his campaign for Island MP. Before Cllr Hastings, the Conservatives were led by former councillor Dave Stewart.
Ha ha. She must have won the latest Tory party poker tournament and now holds the title of “leader of the Conservatives locally” for the next two weeks. Good on you girl!

Yet the Tories only just lost control of the council. Seems like the Tories make an utter mess of everything and as soon as someone takes over they pass the blame onto them. I guess as long as they can deflect our attention as they run of with all our tax money. Current PM was pretending not to live in the UK and as soon as he is out of office he’ll be off to his tax free haven the other side of the world with all out tax money.
