The Isle of Wight Council and the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) have reached an agreement on a deal that will allow the Council to improve the roads, open spaces and footways in current MOJ ownership on the former prison estate.
As part of the agreement, the council will receive a one-off fee of £6.3million from the Government to upgrade and maintain the area to a good standard for the foreseeable future.
The council will take over the ownership of the land from the MOJ.
It is expected that the works might take up to 2 years to complete and the council will communicate with residents as plans for the works are confirmed.
As the deal has just been agreed, residents are asked to be patient until the council has had the time to work through these plans.
Chris Ashman, the council’s director of regeneration, said it was good news for the area. He’s said:
“The highways and footways are in a poor state of repair and local residents have been concerned to see improvements made for some considerable time.
“The council, as highways authority, is better placed to oversee the repairs and future maintenance and as part of the transaction the Ministry of Justice will make a financial contribution towards the costs.

I have to drive/ park on this road for the school run, it’s horrendous bumping along trying to avoid the massive pot holes, and keep an eye on the children running about
Should add some £££ to their property values now the land isn’t owned by MoJ. I imagine living next to the prison is quieter than living next to a school
Since when have this council done anything properly ???
So by the time they’ve paid the astronomical rates to consultants plus architect’s fees then offset money to other projects the actual budget will be more like 2 million if your lucky.
Get ready for shoddy surfaces and excuse after excuse.
Not a lot for the amount of work that needs doing. Think the council were done (over again).
Money already spent on the floating bridge.
Might just be enough to buy a new one.
