The Isle of Wight Council has underlined its commitment to driving up improvements in SEND specialist support on the Island, by announcing expansion plans.
Proposals for 2 new resource provisions for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities will be considered by the council’s Cabinet this Thursday (15th July).
The plans, which follow a consultation, include specialist places for:
- up to 8 children with complex learning difficulties, with or without additional speech language and communication needs, at Brading Primary School
- up to 15 students with social and emotional mental health at Medina College
A recent review of specialist places for children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) showed that further provision was needed, both at primary and secondary education.
Councillor Debbie Andre, who leads on children’s services, education and skills, said:
“We want every child to have the support they need to dream big and achieve highly, no matter what challenges they face.
“With now more than 1,210 children and young people on the Island with an EHCP, we, as a new administration, are committed to ensuring all children have access to the type of education that best meets their needs.
“This new provision will mean more children and young people having their needs met, providing high-quality tailored support within mainstream education settings.”
