The Isle of Wight Council’s popular garden waste collection service looks set to become more expensive from April 2022, with a proposed cost increase of £24 per year.
Currently, it costs Islanders £72 per year for a bi-weekly collection of green waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, windfall fruit and weeds. But from April next year, the Council wants to bump the annual subscription up to £96 – an increase of 33% year on year.
Subscribers won’t get anything more for their money, but the Isle of Wight Council is expected to generate around an extra £250,000 in revenue from the 10,000 bin customers, with scope to increase the capacity moving forward. The price will be held for a minimum of 2 years, so another price increase won’t be expected until April 2024.
When the service first launched in 2017 it was marketed as costing £1 a week, priced at £52 for early subscribers.
A decision on whether to opt for a £2 a month increase will be made by the Council’s cabinet next week.
Local company Onward Waste is offering both bi-weekly (£80) and monthly (£69.99) green waste collections as an alternative.

They are assuming that all the present users of the garden waste collection scheme ,will renew their contract some will not as we think that £72 is a lot and £96 is too high and will not be able to afford to pay, so the amount they will get will be less than the £250,000 that they think they will get a rise of 33% is a rip off !!
Your quite right and they will also loose out on the lower sales of the compost produced because there wont be so much. It will also result in more bonfires as gardeners find another way to dispose of their waste.
Nearly doubled the price in 4 years, absolute disgrace, if a supplier to the council tried that you can imagine the reply!

Makes you wonder what else they will increase by 33%, their wages?
Oh well, back to bonfires again I suppose. 33% isn’t a seriously considered increase it’s extortion.
£96 a year if you are lucky enough to be a subscriber.
So nearly £2 a week – but is really £4 per fortnight because the collection is two weekly.
So £4 per collection. Maximum 26 collections per year.
If you really only use or fill your bin in the spring/summer/autumn then divide the £96 by how many times it is used and collected – say 15 a year that equates to nearly £6.40 each collection.
I read in a national newspaper recently that the aim is for councils to provide free green waste collections sometime in the future.
