A concert by the Newchurch Male Voice Choir and Cantobelle at Quay Arts in Newport raised a staggering £705 for the Island Rotary Club’s’ ‘End Polio Now’ appeal on Sunday.

Gift Aid will be added to the money raised and then the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will triple that amount, meaning that the total going towards the ending of polio will be an amazing £2,546.

The choir performed songs varying from Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ to the Welsh hymn ‘Gwahoddiad’. A 60s set included ‘Portrait of My Love’, ‘House of the Rising Sun’ and ‘Sealed With a Kiss’. They also performed a selection from the musicals, including ‘Maria/Tonight/Somewhere’ from West Side Story, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Miserables and ‘Anthem’ from Chess. They finished the scheduled programme with ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ and encored with the Russian classic ‘Kalinka’, featuring soloist Richard Knowles.

Cantobelle’s wonderful close harmony set included ‘One Fine Day’, ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘Thank You For the Music’, which they dedicated to a renowned Island musician, Tony Rayner, who sadly died last week.

The concert ended with everybody joining the choir in a rendition of ‘Let There Be Peace On Earth’. This was followed by a magnificent Afternoon Tea, with sandwiches and cakes provided by Rotarians from across the Island.
