UPDATED: Coastguard searches are underway between Cowes and Ryde tonight (Friday) following the sighting of red distress flares.
Cowes RNLI lifeboat have launched at the request of Solent Coastguard and both Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams have been tasked.
Island Echo understands red distress flares were spotted in the Cowes/East Cowes area at shortly before 21:30.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are conducting a land based search surrounding the River Medina, whilst Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team conduct a shoreline search between Fishbourne and Ryde.
A pan pan message has been issued to all traffic in the Solent to keep a watchful eye for any persons or vessels in distress.
UPDATE @ 23:15 – Search teams have now been stood down from the incident, with no sign of any persons or vessels in danger discovered.
The pan pan message has been withdrawn. A false alarm with good intent.
Anyone who spots red flares should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, giving as much detail as possible as to the location of the sighting.
