Rev Alison Morley and a group of all ages from Haven Churches on the Isle of Wight are packing an alarm clock when they travel to London later this month – but it’s not for them.
The Christian Aid supporters will join thousands of others from across the UK converging on Westminster on 26th June in a mass lobby, The Time is Now, urging their MPs to act now and not press snooze on climate action.
This group are members of the Haven Churches – the Anglican benefice which spans Yaverland, Brading, St Helens and Seaview – and are part of the national Eco Church movement. They hope to join other Islanders to meet with Bob Seely MP by the banks of the River Thames outside the Houses of Parliament to encourage him to press for legislation to protect the earth and its people.
They will join an estimated 10,000 other people calling on their MPs to pass an ambitious Environment Bill spelling out UK’s strategies for halving of global carbon emissions by 2030 in order to achieve zero emissions by 2050 and to put a halt to the mass extinction of species.
At 14:00 they will join The Climate Coalition campaigners from groups as diverse as Christian Aid, Surfers against Sewage and the Women’s Institute, to sound their alarm clock in a message to parliamentarians about the urgency of their calls.
Rev Alison said:
“The earth’s alarm clock is ringing and our MPs have to wake up and take action.
“Life as we know it is at stake, these are unprecedented times and it is absolutely crucial for governments to take ambitious action to nurture our planet and its people. We are committed to being part of the solution in our local communities and are calling on the government to enact legislation that allows us to protect our local environments, reduce our impact on others and make the choices in our own lives that will reduce of consumption.
“I am a Christian Aid supporter. They work in 37 countries around the world and see what is happening now to communities and livelihoods because of our unlimited consumption of fossil fuels and resources.
“We simply cannot stand by and let this happen – people talk about the legacy we will leave our grandchildren, but climate change is already destroying lives. I am looking forward to being with other people from across the country and different walks of life and with varying interests but united by our desire to see change happen now.
“There are more than sixty people from the Island attending this lobby event. There will be a coach leaving Portsmouth Hard Interchange at 9.30 am. Tickets are £12.20 and you can book on the Time is Now website. If anyone would like to join us we’d be very happy to welcome more people and make an even greater impact on our MP. Let’s make a noise for this earth that we love and not sleepwalk into more destruction.”

Hi there. Can you please correct the heading to say Climate Change instead of Climate Charge? Thank you.
utter garbage these people come out with. There is no climate emergency and most of planet earths population will still be living on this planet in 12 years time.
Nice to see they were travelling in a fossil fuel powered coach to get to london – contributing to the pollution – an email would have been simpler,
but no, lets have a day out in london and pollute all the way there.
The real problem is over population of the planet- reduce the number of people and the pollution levels drop considerably.
No, these people think that by wandering around london, after travelling there unnecessarily, creating more pollution along the way
and virtue signalling by jumping on the climate change bandwagon is the answer – hypocrites.
That banner they are holding looks like it has a plastic coating – how much pollution was created to make that and how long will it take to degrade.
I bet they all have mobile phones, that require intensive strip mining in some foreign country to obtain the raw minerals to make the phone – but that doesn’t matter eh, so long as they can get on facebook.
