UPDATED: Firefighters from Sandown are this evening (Saturday) tackling a small chimney fire at a property in Apse Heath.
Crews were mobilised to Newport Road at around 17:30 following reports of a chimney fire at a residential dwelling.
One appliance from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is in attendance.
UPDATE @ 19:55 – The Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport is now in attendance at the scene and has inspected the chimney from above.
The fire is under control.
The road remains open, however was temporarily closed for a short period to allow the aerial inspection to take place.
UPDATE @ 21:10 – Firefighters remain on the scene and have closed the main Sandown to Newport road once again.
A second inspection of the chimney is being carried out by the ALP.
Southern Vectis’ 21:00 Route 8 bus has diverted via Shanklin and is running 10 minutes behind timetable.
UPDATE @ 21:26 – Newport Road has now reopened and crews are standing down from the incident. The fire has been extinguished.
