A proposal to close Chillerton & Rookley Primary School has hit the blocks following the election of Debbie Andre as the new Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills.
It has been confirmed by Councillor Andre that the decision to close the school has been suspended.
As previously reported by Island Echo, campaigners have been battling to keep the rural school open after proposals were put forward to send pupils to Godshill Primary instead.
Cllr Andre has said:
“I am opposed to the closure of the school and see the value of schools such as this, not just in terms of education, but as an essential part of rural village life. I also want to be able to offer parents and students the widest possible choice in terms of high quality education.
“The decision to close has been suspended”
This is a massive victory for the Save Our School Campaign who have worked tirelessly to save the school and build a business case for the introduction of flexible schooling on the Isle of Wight. This would support the high percentage of home educating parents as well as keep the 170-year-old school viable.
Keith Herbert, spokesperson for the campaign, has said:
“I would like to thank the new council leadership for listening to our concerns and giving parents left in limbo assurances that their children will be welcome at the school in September. The quality of teaching and environment at the school is everything we could wish for our child.”
Chairman Nigel Phillips adds:
“I am very pleased about this development. It is an exciting time for our school. Now we must work hard to build a sustainable future for the sake of our children and community.”

Nice for the locals but try to get though Chillerton during school opening and closing hours. cars just park in the road blocking buses and cars etc for 20 minutes or so.
Put up with it, it’s not for long is it. I guess you think it’s OK to close an entire school, lose kids an education or peoples jobs, just so you can drive in comfort and not get disturbed.
