It has been announced that the public toilets at the foot of the cascade in Ventnor are to be closed at night due to ‘persistent, destructive vandalism’.
The toilets – officially known as the Eastern Esplanade Toilets – are currently closed in order for scaffolding to be erected relating to the works on the cascade and, from Friday (15th September), the toilets will then only be open from 07:00 to 19:00 daily.
It follows a spate of vandalism in the South Wight town, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Updating residents on social media, Councillor Steph Toogood said:
“This decision has been taken reluctantly and is as a result of a small group of individuals constantly targeting this facility.”
Vandalism, lowest or the low but at least they are not drunk and throwing egg fried rice about the place.
if the vandals are caught -then they need to publicly named and the whole island told that these individuals were arrested because they were hanging around public toilets and police felt that they were perverts looking for victims – don’t mention the vandalism – that will utterly destroy their credibility amongst their peers.
Conceal police in the area for a few nights and catch whatever feral youth or drugged up idiots are doing it, then indemnify them and their families the full cost of the repairs – force them to sell vehicles, homes, personal property, everything to meet the costs or if they don’t have enough, loan them the money like students have to pay back loans and dock it from benefits or wages at source until it is recovered, if they still can’t pay up them lock them up for a few years (not weeks) – will teach the others that smashing things up for ‘fun’ comes at a price

Bring back cottaging, that’ll keep the vandals out
The solution is simple. Install surveillance CCTV with an AI system to detect vandal activity. Metal doors can then drop down before releasing gas to either anaesthetise or kill the miscreant.
