Emergency services are responding to a crash in the village of Havenstreet this morning (Monday), which has seen a vehicle roll off the road and onto its roof.
The incident has occurred near to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway on Combley Road, blocking the only road through the village.
Police are already on scene having been alerted to the road traffic collision at just before 08:14.
Fire appliances from both Newport and Ryde have also been mobilised amid fears that the occupant(s) are trapped in the vehicle, with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service deploying an Operational Commander and a Critical Care Paramedic.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area, diverting via The Downs or Firestone Copse.
UPDATE @ 09:00 – The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to the incident, but has since been stood down just minutes away from the scene. The casualty is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance instead.
Emergency service personnel are now beginning to stand down from the incident.
Recovery of the vehicle – a Mini – is underway with the road set to re-open shortly.
UPDATE @ 14:10 – It has been confirmed that a 43-year-old man from Newport – the driver of the vehicle – has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving. He has been released under investigation.
A teenager girl, who was passenger in the car, sustained minor injuries.
Wow! Yet another roofie, wonder how that happened ?
Singalong now – “Up on the roof…”
“I like to roof it, roof it! I like to roof it, roof it! I like to roof it, roof it! You like to- ROOF IT!”
My guess is speeding, how else do vehicles keep
ending up on their roofs.
Until STRICT speeding rules are implemented on this
Lawless isle, such accidents will KEEP happening.
It is a waste of Emergency Services time keep attending to
all the unnesseccary accidents that take place.
It’s about time motorists are charges for the Emergency
Services time.
That will make motorists think!
I agree. If guilty the offending motorist should repay the cost of emergency services.
The same should apply to recreationally drugged and drunk Individuals who use NHS services because of their life choices.
Genuine addicts need help and I get that.
Great idea but the feckless losers who drive drugged up couldn’t care less about paying, even if they were billed. Put them in the sticks so we can see who the village idiots actually are.
We do get charged for emergency services. It’s called taxes mate.
As for STRICT speeding rules, you can still have a solid accident at slow speeds. It doesn’t take a great deal to potentially roll a car or wreck in in spectacular fashion. You can’t expect the entire island to slow down to a snails’ pace to prevent an accident. If anything your most likely going to cause more accidents with that logic, since people would be more inclined to break those absurd restrictions. I’d say that it’s the lack of enforcement that is primarily the problem.
I’d say the drivers themselves need their driving skills re-evaluated after an accident before being allowed back on the road again by a proper examiner. At least that way, if they’ve picked up on any bad habits, and I mean really bad, then the examiner should have the power to revoke said licence until they can pass again.
I have only once seen a car end up on its roof. It was only travelling at about 15mph but the driver struck a central reservation kerbstone nd swerved rolling the car which ended up on its roof. I don’t think it follows that speed puts cars on their roofs but rather lack of attention or simple stupidity. I agree that motorists should be charge for the cost of the Emergency Services – most local authorities bill for “street furniture” if you damage say a telepgraph pole or lamp post with your car.
Drug driving on the Isle of Wight – who would have thought it? Absolute loser.
More from the upside down parkers…
Another druggy anker with possible daughter? should be ashamed ..but won’t be, he’ll get next to nothing done..same other day nodes road cowes fences smashed trees damaged looks a mess yet the prick who done it won’t have to pay nothing towards it ..owners will have to foot the bill.As in cowes nearly a year now still the old stone wall smahed at the cemetary looks a bllody discrase nothing been done to fix it the shit who did it should be made to pay for it but yet again..gets nothing.
So, a 43 year old man with a teenage girl in his car, is drugged up and crashes. Was he taking the girl to school, or taking her home? Doesn’t mention the fact in the report it was his daughter, so why was this girl in the car? More than just drugs to investigate!
