overturnedyachtUPDATED: The crew of Red Funnel’s Red Eagle car ferry have assisted in the rescue of sailors from a capsized yacht in Southampton Water this morning (Saturday).

Whilst travelling between East Cowes and Southampton on a regular crossing, the passenger service vessel was alerted to a yacht in trouble. The crew of the Red Eagle swiftly launched a rescue boat to pluck sailors from the icy waters.

carferryrescue2It is understood three sailors, who were clinging onto the keel of the pleasure boat, have been taken to safety.

UPDATE @ 15:45 – The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have this afternoon confirmed that three people were taken to Netley Sailing Club and checked by an ambulance crew and found to be cold but uninjured following this morning’s incident.

Hamble Independent Lifeboat was launched to the incident and successfully rescued the three individuals.

The Red Funnel ferry response boat kept control of the floating capsized yacht, which could have presented a danger to other vessels.

Southampton Harbour Master also responded to the scene of the incident.

The rescue operation resulted in a small delay to Red Funnel’s services.
