imageUPDATED: A body has been found near to the Floating Bridge in East Cowes this morning (Sunday). 

Police and HM Coastguard were called to the scene at around 09:00 after staff on the Cowes Floating Bridge spotted the body in the water at Seymour Court.

The unidentified individual – believed to be male – has been recovered to dry land by Coastguard teams, where detectives from Newport CID are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

It is currently unclear at this time if the death is being treated as suspicious, however the body remains at the scene some 2 hours after being removed from the River Medina.

The Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit vessel ‘Commander’ is assisting in the incident.

bodydiscoveryfloatingbridge6The area has been cordoned off, however the incident is not affecting Red Funnel or Floating Bridge operations.

UPDATE @ 12:55 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the death is being treated as unexplained.

Officers wearing forensic suits have examined the scene, which has now been completely covered by the rising tide.

Cowes RNLI have been involved in the search for a boat, which is thought to be connected with the discovery. Island Echo understands the male is believed to be a sailor.

UPDATE @14:48 – It has been confirmed that a yacht sought by Police in connection with the discovery has been found at Cowes Yacht Haven.

No one else is missing from the vessel.
