Police and paramedics have attended a single vehicle crash at Apse Heath this evening (Saturday) – and it’s thought the sun is to blame.
Emergency services were called to the main Newport to Sandown Road at Apse Heath at around 19:00 this evening when a car crashed into an embankment and a wall.
Island Echo understands the vehicle was travelling up Newport Road – between the Isle of Wight Airport and Honor & Jeffrey Garden Centre – when the elderly male driver became blinded by the low sun.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have checked over the driver.
Recovery of the badly damaged vehicle has been arranged.

I blame the Audi driver
How frightening for the driver.
Hope he is ok.
So lucky that he was obviously the only car on that normally very busy road when the Sun was at that angle at that particular moment.
Modern cars thankfully now have Sun visors fitted to alleviate such issues.
My 1969 Mini had a sun visor, as did all cars of that era. It’s not something new.
how gullable you are too believe this excuse! elderly lol rest my case.only those cant drive on road when suns out ! take licence..1 less danger
Poor excuse for poor driving, slow down and drive to the conditions, low sun equals low speed.
Drive past an hour ago, the front end is completely done in, surely if you are blinded by the sun you slow down, looks like they got a brick wall doing 50!!
More bad driving on the IW
Let those who are without Sun, cast the first stone. Come on, 35 minutes and no comments about elderly drivers?
How come everybody else managed without crashing. Was this another case of the elderley with poor eye sight whilst driving.
100% yep.islands full of em
The bright sun can be terrible distraction. Hope the poor driver is ok.shame about the car.
Before the usual suspects comment…. this I can believe.
Riding (MC) down lushington hill around 7pm Friday evening the sun was incredibly blinding.
he was going too fast in blinding sun mate
Whatever happened to wearing sunglasses ?????
The winter sun is always low…..
And yes even if you wear glasses you can get sunglasses that clip on or go over your specs !!!!!!!
It’s not just the blinding sun it’s also the strobe effect going past the trees. It can be like flashlights going off in your face. Sometimes these car visors just don’t do it, and as for sunglasses, don’t you mean welding goggles.!!!!
Bottom line, if you can’t see very well slow right down. The car behind you will be having the same problem.
Hope the old fella is OK. I travelled that road in the same direction Saturday evening too
And you didn’t crash using the sun as an excuse.
The only thing to do is place a curfew on the sun and only let it out when it is high in the sky. The courts must act on this and order the sun to wear a tag so that the police can monitor its movements on the Island.
I wonder if he was wearing a pair of large gloves?
The sun can be blinding. Sorry for this poor gentleman. Don’t slate him, he’s not a speeder, he’s not a drink or drug driver. An accident, pure and simple
Sunglasses ….
Not an ‘accident pure simple’ the driver could have taken action and this avoidable collision need not have happened. Very lucky no one else involved.
That’s what the sun visors are for.
If your short they don’t always help!
Then you shouldn’t be driving…
Doh sunglasses …
Surely you would do as the highway code mentions slow down or stop.. Why would you swerve?
One can easily be blinded by the sun when the inside of the windscreen is dirty – although often it’s marks left from condensation that haven’t been cleared adequately rather than dirt. Good idea to give your windscreen at least a weekly wipe inside. Says me, who doesn’t – I will though, from now on.
Modern car’s windscreens are fine, older car’s have tiny scratches etc. Also what do sun glasses do when suden reflection or direct sun . This time of year morning evening unfortunately will have these Accidents. Sun move’s quickly and might only be in blinding position for Couple of mins, not for hours. Most drivers will never of experienced. Maybe some comments on hear from inexperienced drivers !.
Nothing to do with the fact he smelt of alcohol…..
old people need to lay down and disintegrate already!
