Lighted materials discarded in a lay-by bin – thought to be used sparklers – have led to a call out for firefighters in Ryde tonight (Tuesday).
1 retained appliance was mobilised to Ashey Road at just before 20:05 following a 999 call reporting a bin on fire at the side of the carriageway.
Firefighters arrived on scene to discover the Island Roads-owned waste bin – and the immediate area around it – well alight.
The fire was extinguished and the melted plastic dampened down.
It’s unknown if the container was set alight maliciously, or by accident, although it is thought to have been caused by discarded sparklers.

Bins don’t set themselves on fire.
must be some Bonfire night pranksters
on the prowl.
Or just some more of the village idiots.
Accident lol, cause it was on purpose
How are the general public allowed to buy fireworks, let them off in the street, back gardens or wherever they feel like it? My dog has suffered terribly every night for the last 10 days! Despite doing everything I can to help him. Animals drop down dead! People mamed for life! They are EXPLOSIVE devices! How is it legal?? Bins being set alight, burning embers, reigning down on kids and adults at organised public displays. They are dangerous, and should be banned.
