BEER AND BUSES WEEKEND CANCELLED AGAIN DUE TO COVID PANDEMIC

Published at:

The annual Classic Buses, Beer and Walks Weekend, which was due to take place in mid-October, has been cancelled for the second year running.

This popular event takes many months of detailed planning and organisers say there are still too many uncertainties due to the coronavirus pandemic, despite the Prime Minister announcing yesterday (Monday) that life should be back to almost near-normal by the end of June.

IW Bus Museum and IW CAMRA hope that the event can return in 2022. The last event was held in October 2019.

Ben Bartram, the principal organiser for the IW Bus Museum, has said:

“This is a carefully considered decision. We have been talking to key stakeholders in recent weeks, including the vehicle owners who provide the classic buses. The consensus is that we cannot risk significant outlay of both funds and voluntary organisers’ time, as we cannot be confident of being able to put the necessary infrastructure in place. The normal timescales for planning the event simply cannot be followed”.

Tim Marshall of IW CAMRA adds:

“We realise that many will be disappointed with the decision. However, although we now know that restrictions will ease for pubs and other licensed venues soon, we have had to decide now”.

Seems a bit premature? 7 months away yet. I would have thought all of the population would have been vaccinated by then? Puzzled?

Surprising news, a day after those announcements! But hopefully they do organise smaller events.

As the date is now well established in the calendar, hopefully they will be able to arrange something for the weekend nearer the time. Obviously this will be on a smaller scale, and probably using only Island/Museum buses. Even a parade of passenger free buses through the towns would be better than nothing, and would provide a chance for them to ‘pass the bucket around’. It is their main ‘earner’ after all.
