The Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team put all their hard training to the test last week with the first evening time trial at Ningwood and a mainland visit to Thruxton.
On Tuesday, Kev Chant, James Veal, Stuart Waite and Jerry Cooper headed off to the circuit at Thruxton for their first road race of the season. Kev, who competed in the E1/2 race, went out strong from the start and covered every attack. He showed his class at the finish by outsprinting some of the top riders in the South-East to take first place. The other team members were competing in the 3rd Category race in a field of 60 riders. James managed to get in a break early on and stayed away, coming home in a well-earned 3rd place.
The first evening round of the Wightlink-Wight Mountain Time Trial Series kicked off last Thursday despite the adverse weather conditions and 50 keen cyclists braved the elements to race on the Ningwood 10 Mile circuit. It was tough going on the course, but there were some good times set by both the Seniors and Juniors who battled with the wind to the finish line.
Wightlink-Wight Mountain CRT rider, Kev Chant, continued his winning streak pulling out yet another strong performance to take the overall win in 21 minutes 21 seconds. He was closely followed by teammates, Simon Ambrosini, who also took the Vets +50 top spot, with a time of 21.49 and Joe Staunton taking 3rd place in 22.12.
Kevin Bull (NAUT Cycling) dug in to take the Vets +60 category in 25.46 and Dominique Noyce (Independent) competing in her first TT, pulled out a great ride to take the Ladies title in 27.10.
All the Junior riders who competed put in solid rides on the night, proving they are made of tough stuff. However, James Fletcher (Team Spy) romped home in 23.28 making him not only the top placed Junior, but also the fastest non-WLWM rider. Lilly O’Dell (St Ives CC) secured her second win of the Series by finishing in a creditable 28.33.
