Work is progressing to repair a sewer pipe that carries all of Ryde’s wastewater away from the town after a sinkhole appeared at Appley back in January.
Southern Water has confirmed that following geotechnical surveys carried out over the past couple of weeks, no further holes or voids have been found.
Engineers now need to investigate the sewer, how it collapsed and the extent of the damage caused. To do this, teams will need to access the 1-metre wide pipe via an existing chamber downstream of the sinkhole.
To enable the inspections to be carried out safely and allow for follow-up works, the utility company is installing an over-pumping system so that the pipe is clear for a camera.
It is currently unclear how long the works are likely to continue for and whether this will have an impact on the summer tourism trade.
Tony Knott, Senior Project Manager for Wastewater Networks, says:
“We wish to reassure everyone that work continues as a priority on the collapsed sewer at Appley Beach and we are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing.
“Public safety remains our priority, therefore, when there is no site activity planned, manned security is employed to ensure that security of the installation is maintained and public safety is upheld.

North Walk – the main road that goes around the canoe lake – has now re-opened to motorists. However, Appley car park remains closed.
Seems a massive job.
