A 51-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly punching a woman in the face during a disturbance at Sainsbury’s in Cowes earlier this afternoon (Wednesday).
Police were called to the supermarket at around 14:50 following reports that a man was acting aggressively towards staff and refusing to leave the premises.
It is understood the man had entered the store with a dog, prompting staff to ask him to leave due to store policy. A customer is said to have supported workers in asking the man to exit. He then allegedly responded by punching the woman in the face.
Island Echo is told that the victim has only just been given the all clear from cancer – and is now having to battle with the effects of today’s alleged assault.
The suspect is said to have left the shop and walked further into town, with officers locating him near the Red Jet terminal.
The 51-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault by beating and using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
He remains in custody at this time.
