Plans are being lodged by Cellnex UK, on behalf of EE and Three, to install upgraded telecommunications equipment on top of Shanklin Theatre.
At the moment 5G coverage is not available in Shanklin for those on Three and only partially available for those on EE.
There is already equipment on the top of the Grade II listed building on Steephill Road, and the new antennas and dishes could also improve the 2G, 3G and 4G service for the area.
In planning documents submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, Cellnex said the proposed equipment has been designed to be the least ‘visually intrusive’ option, in the sensitive conservation area.
The telecommunications company said the height and bulk of the equipment has been kept down to an ‘absolute minimum’.
6 antennas will be removed and 6 new ones installed along with other operational equipment, but any visual impact would be significantly outweighed by the immense benefits of the new 5G connectivity, Cellnex said.
The increased 5G coverage is in very high demand, it said.
You can view the plans, 23/01617/FUL and 23/01618/LBC, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 27th October.

This is it! WEF are about to activate the covid bots!
Only about 2% of people will understand this
Are you a troll, or are you actually the swivel-eyed GBeebies viewer you sound like?
Actually I don’t watch BBC propaganda, I only watch GB News because they are the only news organisation that specialise in GB news, I don’t want Americans to tell me how to think!
I’ve already upgraded and installed 5G antennas at Rowridge, Chillerton Down and Down End (Carisbrooke).
There just not active yet.
If you go to Seaview you can pick up 5G from Portsmouth. So good to see the Island is dragging itself into the future
I live in Shanklin and receive 5G already.
Shanklin used to routinely top the IW sunshine list until mobile phones made it more shady.
The gauge was on top of the theatre and the shadows from the mobile phone aerials blocked the record of sunny hours.
Remove the aerials entirely and make Shanklin a brighter place again.
You are a proper idiot.
I doubt you can rleven add to 10
Pleasently surprised at the replies so far, I was fully expecting the tin foil brigade to have hijacked the comments section
