Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has also responded in the interests of scene safety.
UPDATE @ 21:26 – The scene has now been cleared.
UPDATE ON FRIDAY – Police have confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.
He remains in custody at this time.

What’s the betting speeding is to blame.
When will IW Council start spending our extortionate
Council tax money wisely and install speed Camera’s
islandwide. 20mpg is plenty more and more sensible
parts of the country are rolling it out, even
Bognor Regis
Putting in the cameras is the easy bit. Maintaining them against vandallism and having someone available 24/t/365 to watch/analyse is the expensive part – a recurring, very large cost. Surely it’s better to prevent, through education and through consistent. effective sentencing?
And 20 mpg? sounds llike my old Volvo.
They don’t get vandalised in Central London,
if they do they get replaced immediately,
Also the island needs more police.
Re your education comment, unfortunately you
cannot educate idiots.
20mph is required in certain areas on the island,
take Godshill High Street for example, it states
20mph, but vehicles speed through this High Street
at 40mph+
There are no deterrents on the island to STOP
speeding.
Your old Volvo sounds a beauty, when cars were
cars.
your a goon 20 mph..jesus..its just crap driving standards..
well said 20mph is pathetic. How am i supposed to get to work on time if i have a lie in?
20mph? Don’t be ridiculous. It’s bad enough idiots driving 30 everywhere no matter what the limit.
20mph is coming it’s only a matter of time.
Already in Wales, London and Bognor is introducing it.
It is only because the island is run by out of touch
Dinosaurs, they are slow to take the Bull by the
Horns.
The Island is stuck in the 1970s
20mph is ridiculously slow, other than in places like Godshill. The blanket 20mph nonsense in Wales is causing huge resentment and a petition against it running to around half a million signatures.
