A Newport man who drove home drunk after consuming 8 pints whilst watching England v Iran in the football World Cup at the pub has been handed a driving ban.
Benjamin Burnett, 21, of The Finches in Gunville, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that a member of Burnett’s family had called the Police to report that the 21-year-old had driven home from Newport Town Centre under the influence of alcohol and had caused minor damage to a neighbour’s car.
Police officers attended the address and spoke to Burnett – who admitted that he had driven home from the Hogs Head. At his home, Burnett was asked to conduct a breath test, which returned a reading of 81. The legal limit being 35.
He was arrested and taken to Newport Police Station where he gave another sample – this 1 reading 97 in 100 millilitres of breath, an increasing amount.
Defending, Henry Farley said that his client had no previous convictions and that alcohol use had become more prevalent in his life in recent months.
In a report read to the court by Probation, it claimed that the 21-year-old had consumed around 8 pints of lager throughout and after the football match and he originally intended to leave his car in town and walk back home.
Magistrates handed Burnett a 12-month community order with 10 rehabilitation days and 80 hours of unpaid work attached. The 21-year-old was also banned from driving for a total of 25 months. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge fee of £114.

Who needs enemies, when you have got a family like his.
Family did right thing both for this guy and others, show’s they care (unlike some). Not sure though why 25mths ban when he was compliant etc when others crash several cars, no insurance or licence and run from police, defiant and refuse to breath/blood etc and then give Court hard time and they given less ban. All agreed he done wrong Inc himself and supportive family – credit should be given a little and lesson learnt
Your comments I think are posted to provoke reaction and stir up some sh*t!
IMO the family member did the right thing. If you have family, pray they are not killed by a moronic drunk driver. You’ll wind your neck in and change your attitude if it were to affect you directly.
There are no words to describe what this selfish idiot did??
Jesus,8 pints. I wouldn’t be able to find my car, let alone drive it
What a menace. At least somebody did the right thing and reported him. He’ll be in for a shock when he tries to get reinsured. It’ll cost more than a half decent car. No-one was injured luckily. He should count his lucky stars and take a reality check.
Serves him right, why didn’t he walk in to town in the 1st place
It really beggars belief that people these days drink as much as they do then think nothing of jumping in their car and driving on public road
It’s most definitely not ok. They are breaking the law, risking innocent people’s lives.
Glad another selfish idiot has been taken off the islands roads. Hope those 8 pints were worth it. 25 month ban is a decent result. Your young and dumb and you don’t deserve to hold a driving licence.
You’re young…
The Finches is in Carisbrooke.
Carisbrooke is in Newport according to post office..
Yes but they have said Gunville which is incorrect.
Why are people continually thinking that if there is a celebration they need to get drunk?
Because no great story started with a salad
Yes it is sad that whatever the celebration, people want to drink alcohol. Many drink far too much each day, if at a festival, , is even worse as they leave such a mess behind… none caring, due to alcohol, ( also drugs ). Unknown why people cannot just enjoy the time, together, without getting pissed or drugged up ? Then more people would start to care about others, no doubt. Maybe leaving less mess. Well that’s the plan…
Some people cant even drive sober without crashing into 3 cars rolling over 27 times and squashing Dear Mrs Tiddles prize roses……
In Qatar you get a good public whipping first, 6 months in prison and a £800 fine never allowed to drive a car again, UK judges are too soft, lucky it was a car he hit, and not a human being.
This wanker had a defence a defence there is no defence for drink driving anyone who drinks and drives should not be allowed the right to defence council they shouldn’t even go to court it should be licence revoked for life never to be allowed to hold a driver’s license again or take a test again anywhere in the world 10 years in prison and a £100,000 pound fine first offence and that’s on the spot no going to court just licence taken away pay the fine there and then in full then straight to prison if you don’t got the money your family have to sell the house or what ever they have to pay it and there should be NO drink drive limit at all you drink you don’t drive even if you just had a sip that should be the law plain and simple.
