Police have confirmed that 2 males were arrested last night (Thursday) after being caught inside the Parkbury Hotel on Broadway , allegedly stripping the property of copper piping and fixtures.
It comes just over a month since there was a shed fire at the vacant hotel which has been up for sale since 2020 after the collapsed Carlauren Group – which also owned the the Ocean Hotel in Sandown and The Auckland Hotel in Shanklin – fell into administration.
According to Police, last night 1 of the Neighbourhood PCSO’s discovered individuals in the Parkbury Hotel as part of his proactive patrols and after other officers attended, both males were arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary and later released under investigation.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Both males were arrested at the scene for burglary and later released, and are due to be further interviewed under caution in due course. As part of our forces commitment to local policing and relentlessly pursuing criminals we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in our neighbourhoods.”

I would of thought that if the individuals were caught in the act why do the police release them under investigation, you would think that they would be held and charged with the offence the same day. Released to go and do the same somewhere else, unbelievable
This is just like the time Irish vandals broke into the derelict hotel and redecorated it. It’s an outrage!
See the reason why.
Our prisons are filled with the world criminals now, whose crimes would make this seem to be a delight in many neighbourhoods in the UK now.
So courts will NEVER again give meaningful sentences to anything but the worst as their is no room to do so in prisons now or ever again.
The criminals know this so we end up with more and more as they know at worst a fine now.
How many people get arrested every day? Dont forget we’re part of Hampshire now so all the costs and cuts get shared; not to mention the amount of money and time it would take to process 100s of people a day so to charge, keep them and to take them to court all costs money which they aint got so they triage, violent offenders would be kept and expedited whilst that of these 2 gentlemen who were probably being non-violent would be bailed.
If guilty give them community service – demolishing the whole place, and clearing the site !
Win win.
Firmly the fault of the neglectful owners of the property. Shameful to let properties end up like this. Sandown deserves better. Good luck to the lads. Hope the profit covers the fines…
Not exactly the crime of the centaury. They should be released from bail with no charges, the IOW police should concentrate on detecting and apprehending violent offenders. The owners of this eyesore should be ordered to demolish it.
