2 takeaways on the Isle of Wight have been handed a 1-star food hygiene rating by the Isle of Wight Council, showing that major improvement is necessary at both establishments.
Lake Kebab & Pizza House at Sandown Road, Lake was inspected on 19th June this year. Now, 36 days later, it has been confirmed that inspectors have awarded just 1 star out of a possible 5. The worst rating is 0.
The kebab house previously boasted a ‘Good’ 4-star rating, but standards have slipped and now major improvement is needed to hygienic food handling and management of food safety. The cleanliness and conditions of the facilities and building are said to be generally satisfactory.
Hong Kong Express on the Esplanade in Ryde was also inspected on 19th June, equally achieving a 1-star ‘major improvement necessary’ rating.
The Chinese takeaway was given a 2-star rating in September 2016, which has now dropped one step further. Major improvement is required to the management of food safety, with improvement necessary for hygienic food handling and cleanliness and conditions of facilities/building.
The ratings have been made available through www.omgomg.co.uk based on official reports from the Isle of Wight Council.
UPDATE – The owner of Lake Kebab House has moved to issue a statement regarding the recent food hygiene score.
The owner has told Island Echo that he has requested a re-inspection for all the work needed doing and is now awaiting a visit from the Isle of Wight Council.
He would like to reassure all customers that all practices and food hygiene is paramount to his business.

Surely they have to close until up to standard.. I don’t believe that they still can carry on trading putting people at risk of salmonella etc.. Personally I think changes should come into affect immediately.. Obviously they have to be given time but I don’t think food should be leaving an establishment until all health and hygiene standards are met..
You are right, they should be shut down until they can clean up. It is a slap in the face for customers who go to these premises or order a takeaway to enjoy quality food that is not going to damage your health or potentially land you in hospital.
They can stay open whilst the improvements happen. The inspector will have given them a time frame too complete the works and come up too standard if they fail too meet the requirements in the allotted time frame then they’ll be made too shut until the inspector is satisfied and allows them too open again.
There is a simple answer and that is for customers to vote with their feet. There are plenty of other takeaway’s to choose from that are of a good standard.
If that’s the case would you please name some ?
Eat in not out!
Good gawd I had a take away from Hong Kong express just last night!!!
Phleurgh! Phleurgh! Sorry. Just got back from Hong Kong.
Tell you what tho, a kebab could murder me!
Hahaha…bonk… sorry, head does that occasionally.
I’m fine, I’m fine, just weren’t the same after that chow mein the other week….heeeee hoooorrr! Oh, and the donkey noise comes out every now and again.
Think I need a vet
Yeh, a 68, 72 and a 183 please…What’s that?
Oh, the Salmonella surprise? Not on the menu? Ok, just leave it out then….oh you can’t…all your food contains it….ok…it’s included…. awesome.. Huh? Half hour, 40 minutes. Ok. Thank you. Woohoo!
“30 minutes til my death”
Just don’t ask for a number 2 !!
i know which takeaways I will be avoiding!!
Shame, didn’t think Michael Hang would let standards slip this far. Had a take-away from there this week and it was average but didn’t make me ill at least. I used to work there as a delivery driver and it was all very closely controlled (the money, I mean!!)
I work at Hong Kong express and I can happily say that the food hygiene is a lot better than what people can make it out to be. Everything is cleaned on a regular basis and everything is cooked fresh.
I have just passed the establishment in Lake and the food hygiene label in the window displays a rating of 4, this is misleading and also false, this make a mockery of the inspection.
