1ST NEWPORT SCOUT GROUP CELEBRATE SUCCESS ACROSS THE BOARD

The 1^st Newport Scout Group held their Annual Presentation of Awards Evening on 17th July, which was attended by 100  guests, youth members, leaders and parents.

Rod Warne, Group Scout Leader, in his introduction, spoke of the growth of the Group, the very busy schedule of camps and activities and of the recent success in winning both the young people and children category and the overall winner spot at the Community Action IW awards for 2018.

Trophies were presented to Beaver Scouts (6 to 8-year-olds), Cub Scouts (8 to 10 years, Scouts (10 to 14) and Explorer Scouts (14 to 18) for a variety of categories including attendance, improvement and smartness. Section specific awards were made based around the programme elements for each age range including teamwork which always features very highly throughout Scouting.

Whilst the majority of the awards available for the young people there were also a few for adult volunteers for service to the Group and also to the local community.

Graham Drudge, Chair of the Executive Committee, publicly congratulated Rod on his Judges Special Award at the Community Action IW awards for 2018 and also reminded all those present that, despite popular myth adults, in Scouting, do not get paid – they are all volunteers who give up many hours to provide the high quality activities for the young people. He then thanked all the leaders on behalf of the parents and youth members.

Assistant Scout Leader Chris Kirby was presented with his ‘Wood Badge’. This was the culmination of many months hard work on top of his full-time job and his weekly Scouting commitment. Introduced by Baden-Powell himself the ‘Wood Badge’ is an internationally recognised Training Award for Leaders in Scouting and is proudly worn by recipients across the globe. It is also recognised in the workplace so reflects one of the many benefits for adults volunteering in Scouting today.

At the conclusion of the awards, in a surprise move, 3 Scouts – Libbey and Abbey Jerram and Emma Morey – stood up and thanked all the Leaders at 1^st Newport for everything they do for them.

Rod thanked the Scouts for their kind but unexpected comments and also thanked everyone who has helped out over the last 12 months, at 1^st Newport, paying particular attention to the Leadership team, the Executive Committee and members of the various sub-committees.
