The Bay CE School in Sandown could cut up to 15 jobs as the education establishment is operating at a deficit.
According to the Isle of Wight Council, action needs to be taken to secure the long term stability of the school. This could mean that 15 jobs are cut and the workload of those that remain increases, although no final decisions have been taken.
Trade unions representing teachers and staff are calling for the proposals to be scrapped.
Adrian Baker, GMB Union regional organiser, has said:
“The strength of feeling of the staff on this matter is quite extraordinary.
“They feel that above all else, the pupils and the wider community will suffer due to a heavily increased workload leaving less time available to both fulfil their roles to the best of their ability, and support the most important part of any school, the pupils.
“All unions have concerns relating to the figures given, the impact of the cuts on safeguarding, health and safety and morale at the school, as well as the impact on young people.”
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The school is currently rapidly improving and going from strength to strength, with its popularity reflected in strong admissions.
“The school, however, is currently operating at a deficit and needs to take actions to ensure its long term stability – in particular it has a staffing model which is currently unaffordable.
“In relation to this, options are at present out to consultation, and school leaders and governors will be considering all comments before any final decision.
“Following consultation meetings with staff and with professional association representatives, the school is considering extending the consultation period in order to provide further clarification on the information requested.”
