The Government has confirmed that Islanders aged 70 and over, as well as the clinically vulnerable, will start receiving their COVID-19 vaccination invitations from this week.
With over 3.8 million people in the country already vaccinated, including over half of all 80s, the next stage of the vaccination programme now comes into play with the vaccine opened up to another 2 priority groups.
There are around 25,000 people living on the Isle of Wight over the age of 70 and many of these will have already been vaccinated as around 10,000 are aged 80 and over.
Nationally, 4.6 million over 70s are now going to be invited to have their jab, alongside around 1 million clinically vulnerable. Those classed as clinically vulnerable include organ transplant recipients and people with certain types of cancer.
It’s hoped all over 70s will be vaccinated by mid-February, allowing restrictions to be eased into March. If successful, it means 88% of those most at risk of dying from COVID-19 will be protected, significantly reducing the death rate and the pressure on the NHS.
Over 300,000 vaccines a day are currently being administered nationally.
It’s unknown how many Islanders have received their first vaccine dose as official figures are yet to be released on a local level. However, it is thought to now potentially be in excess of 15,000, including a large number of NHS and health care staff.
As reported by Island Echo this morning, it is currently hoped that all over 18s will be vaccinated by September, paving the way for a normal return to school for children for the start of the new academic year and almost certainly securing a normal Christmas this year.

You’re dangerously naive.
Your dangerously brain washed
if you or “real islander” and now apparently “Mr Justice” can back up with hard evidence any of the anti vaccine claims you make on your posts, I’ll happily stand in the street with a sign calling people sheep, while wearing a sheep costume.. I’ll even throw in a “baaa” every now and then.
“The shaming of lockdown sceptics as friends of the plague eerily echoes past outbursts of hysteria during times of transmissible illness. Witchcraft panics exploded during times of plague.” – Brendan O’Neill
So smallpox, rabies, whooping cough, scarlet fever, diphtheria, tetanus, mumps, measles.flu, polio, rubella,Ebola etc.etc.,have been fought against by vaccines- successfully I may add. I seriously think you need to have a rethink about vaccines . Also the common cold is not a corona virus. Up to you whether you have a jab or not it’s your choice.
Everything you say here is true BUT, these are different times! We have billionaires running the show now ( Bill Gates is one of) they care about money and power, not your health! When you were growing up,governments cared for the public’s health, but now? Look at matt Hancock, voted against food for the poorest of children in this country. And you trust him to care for your health? Good luck with that!
Never have said that I trust Matt Hancock ever in any posts. All I’ve stated is that over time vaccines have got better and better. When real islander calls the Covid virus as a common cold it bloody annoys me. No vaccine has started with a 100% success rate but as stated got better and better with time. In time the Covid vaccine will prove as successful as the flu jab. Yes your right about Bill Gates. Stay safe mate.
Well you have a choice like everyone else, and if you choose to take the vax etc, then you will be following what Matt halfcock is saying. People call me a conspiracy nut,and that’s fine. But what people don’t realise is I would love to be wrong about all this! I have predicted lots of things since this started, and I’m sad to say I’ve been right about them all. I try not to predict any more, I just get abuse, and maybe it’s better that people don’t know what’s coming! All the best ,TC.
You just can’t help yourself, can you? Troll.
Why not write to Father Christmas while you’re at it?
What did I say real islander? Dont waste your time and effort buddy!. Forget about it. Just sit back and watch it unfold. They will soon see the results, and the funniest thing of all,is these fools think the vaccination will be the end of this all,ha ha.lets see then. You have covid 21 to deal with yet, later in the year!
You know what there is also no vaccine for? Stupidly. Based on what you said I expect you take no medicine at all. Go back to your flat earth videos ‘Real Islander’. I listen to the science and not a random ‘documentary’ that can portray what ever the creator wants. I will get my vaccine as soon as asked. As I do every year for the Flu. I’ve lived twice as long as I should have done and I am sure the vaccines that I get help towards this.
Got my letter to get my vaccine so I phoned the Bay Medical centre yesterday, all day, but couldn’t get thru, called today eventually someone answered and told me they haven’t got any and they will phone when they get some in. doesn’t seem to be going as well as we are being told.
What about the very elderly that have not been contacted yet? A 95 year old house bound lady who lives next door, has not been contacted yet, regarding her first vaccine ! Why Newport Health Centre. Dower House, Pyle St, Newport.
Have you forgot her ?
Unfortunately you cannot phone to complain or enquire about vaccines.
